I timed my visit to the area pretty badly, just as the late Summer weather broke in a big way, so the bigger peaks in the Mweelrea and Sheeffry hills were permanently buried in rain clouds. However, this low top and the two others in the valley overlooking Killadoon looked a decent option for an afternoon circuit to hike.
Parking at Killeen church (
A (L756 753)) I crossed over and followed the road SE. Reaching another junction (
B (L764 745)) I crossed and and followed the minor road up until a gate was reached. However, on the map here it shows that minor road being a small distance along after turning left, so I might be recalling incorrectly. My old 1980s vintage OS map agrees with my memory, so I will leave that one open! Anyway, after passing through the gate at the top of the rise (around
C (L766 738)), I followed the path for a hundred yards or so before breaking off up onto the side of the lower top which is unnamed on the OS map but I think is referred to locally as Killadoon Hill (895ft/273mtr).
My map indicated the presence of a megalithic tomb in this immediate area, and a passing farmer who I chatted with also mentioned it to me. The name of the hill seems to allude to it, as "burial place of the hill-fort", possibly. Sure enough I did pass this partially collapsed tomb on the way to the first top (as pictured), although it is unmarked and seemed to have no direction markers.
The traverse via another minor top to Corrymalley is reasonably boggy in several places, so gaiters would be recommended even in quite dry conditions.
When I reached the trig point on Corrymally Hill (941ft/286mtr),the original plan - time permitting - was to continue round to the third hill in the horseshoe, but a look at the valley between showed a continuous fenceline along the base of the forestry, so I decided to give it a miss on this occasion. I also had noted the previous day that access to the other hill was not obvious from the road on the other side of the valley, with several high fencelines and at least one "no access" sign. It was a case of re-tracing my outward route until I passed the tomb again , dropping down to the farm track and back to base.
A decent walk of about 4.5 hours, which on a clear day would afford very good views SE to Mweelrea and W to NW over the coastline.
