[RWD version 1 ]
Mackoght & Errigal Loop Walk We climbed Mackoght from the normal car park for Errigal (B94291 19734). The under foot conditions were very wet and there appeared to be small tracks going in every which direction towards Errgial. It would appear that Covid-19 had made the destination a popular one highlighting the already well needed track and trail development across the lower bog. The damage here sadly would be avoidable if a proper track were developed.
Errigal from the summit of Mackoght.
The route up Mackoght was straight forward and once at the col between Errigal and Mackoght we were away from all other walkers. The track from this point returned to a less trodden one. From the summit of Mackoght a quick return to the col where we then headed North along a small track which contours around towards the Northern ridge line to the summit of Errigal.
Scrambling up the Northern ridge to the summit of Errigal.
The North ridge has some lovely grade 1 scrambling up to the summit of Errigal, and only one mountain runner passed us. A far more quiet side of the mountain. From the summit we followed the normal route back down to the car park. Again the obvious trail damage due to crowds is showing on the upper mountain side too. On My last visit to Errigal in 2014 I shared the summit with a friend and a brother..this time the summit was packed with crowds, of course it was a weekend too. Great to see people getting out into the hills, hopefully the increased crowds may allow for track repair and development in the future.
